Having had a career spanning various industries and professions over the last decade and a half, there is one thing that I know for certain. The state of our wellbeing influences pretty much everything, especially our performance at work!  For simplicity, let’s define wellbeing as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity – this is from the World Health Organization.

Whilst overcoming challenge is just one aspect of our human experience, most of us will know someone who is currently enduring more than their fair share of challenge, severely testing their state of wellbeing. Whilst there is plenty of information out there on the internet to help overcome wellbeing problems, there are a few ‘basics’ that everyone can fall back during challenging times.

Focus on what’s in your control.

One thing we are all in control of is the choices we make for ourselves, and this is where I would suggest you start.  Now is a great time to be developing knowledge and practices to maintain your own wellbeing and a sense of balance during difficult times.  With a clear and calm mind, you are putting yourself in the best position to navigate your way forward and be able to perceive opportunities that could otherwise be missed.   Here’s a few things to keep in mind as part of your ‘Wellbeing Toolkit’

Your Breath

We never seem to think about how we breathe until we are struck down with a flu or virus or walking up a flight of stairs, yet it is one the most important aspects of our survival.  Think about it, you can survive without food for weeks, you can survive without water for days, but you will struggle to survive without breathing for just a few minutes.  There is a reason why Indian and Chinese systems of medicine revolve around Prana and Chi – the quality of our breath has a direct impact on everything!  Strengthening your lungs and the way they convert oxygen to energy is a great strategy (It is interesting that the Covid 19 virus attacks the lungs). 

Support your digestive system to do it’s job properly

Again this is going to sound like it’s too simple to be of any value, but consider for a moment what happens when food isn’t digested properly.  It triggers a chain of events that most often result in disease in some form or another.  In fact, 70-80% of our immune system is found in our gut, and a healthy digestive system plays a role in warding off all sorts of nasties.  There are plenty of simple things you can do to strengthen your digestion.

Support your mind

If you trace back almost every action and decision you make, you will arrive at the mind and the way we perceive information.  To one person, airplanes are killing the planet.  To another person, airplanes are saving the planet by keeping the economies going.  Who is right and who is wrong?  There’s an argument that would last forever because of the different frames of reference.  The way we ‘take in’ and ‘digest’ information and make meaning out of it influences our wellbeing to it’s core.  The ability for us to understand and observe our own perceptive processes and the way our mind works makes an incredible difference to our wellbeing.
