A profile video is a great way to introduce yourself to prospective employers and recruiters. It is like a talking resume to help you stand out from the crowd.
Here’s how to do it yourself…
1. Choose a camera
You can use your phone’s camera, a webcam, or your laptop’s webcam. Video files can be quite large so also ensure you have enough storage on the device you are using.
2. What will you say?
Create a script or an outline to organize your ideas on the things you want to say. But don’t read directly from your script. Be as natural as possible and use it as a guide only.
3. Shoot in a well-lit place
When recording the video, you should sit facing the light and the camera is pointed towards you. Having the light coming from behind you will create a dark video.
4. Keep your background clean
If you are shooting yourself, make sure you have a clean background. A professional-looking background is better and more pleasant than an untidy one.
5. Record your video
Record in a place without background noise if possible. Make sure you speak loudly and clearly. You can do a number of ‘takes’ and choose the best ones later.
6. Edit your video
Clean your video by cutting out scenes you don’t want to include and increase/decrease the volume or include background music. Adding text and graphics can also make your video more entertaining. There are plenty of free (and paid) video editing tools out there to allow you to add a touch of fllair to your video. Or if you would like us to help you edit, click here.
7. Upload your video to YouTube.
We rely on YouTube to host videos and if you don’t already have your own YouTube channel, it’s really easy to do. If you record using your smartphone, you can upload the video directly to YouTube, or transfer the file to your computer and upload from there (you need to be logged in with a Google account). Click the video icon on the top right side of the screen, and click upload video.
Once clicked, you can simply drag the video you want to upload or click the “Select Files” button.
While waiting for your video to be uploaded, you can put content on the Title bar and on the Description bar. You can also choose a thumbnail for your video.
If you want to make your video public on YouTube, click the Public option. If you would like to keep your video from being found on YouTube, choose Unlisted which will still allow it to be seen on Fllair. We usually recommend making it unlisted, but the choice is yours.
7. Copy the Youtube URL into the Details tab in Fllair
Once uploaded, YouTube will generate a link that you can use to share your video.
You then copy this Video Link into the space provided in the Details tab.
