How to create AND upload a great PROFILE VIDEO.

A profile video is a great way to introduce yourself to prospective employers and recruiters. It is like a talking resume to help you stand out from the crowd.

Here’s how to do it yourself…

1. Choose a camera

You can use your phone’s camera, a webcam, or your laptop’s webcam. Video files can be quite large so also ensure you have enough storage on the device you are using.

2. What will you say?

Create a script or an outline to organize your ideas on the things you want to say. But don’t read directly from your script. Be as natural as possible and use it as a guide only.

3. Shoot in a well-lit place

When recording the video, you should sit facing the light and the camera is pointed towards you. Having the light coming from behind you will create a dark video.

4. Keep your background clean

If you are shooting yourself, make sure you have a clean background. A professional-looking background is better and more pleasant than an untidy one.

5. Record your video

Record in a place without background noise if possible. Make sure you speak loudly and clearly. You can do a number of ‘takes’ and choose the best ones later.

6. Edit your video

Clean your video by cutting out scenes you don’t want to include and increase/decrease the volume or include background music. Adding text and graphics can also make your video more entertaining. There are plenty of free (and paid) video editing tools out there to allow you to add a touch of fllair to your video. Or if you would like us to help you edit, click here.

7. Upload your video to YouTube.

We rely on YouTube to host videos and if you don’t already have your own YouTube channel, it’s really easy to do. If you record using your smartphone, you can upload the video directly to YouTube, or transfer the file to your computer and upload from there (you need to be logged in with a Google account). Click the video icon on the top right side of the screen, and click upload video.

Once clicked, you can simply drag the video you want to upload or click the “Select Files” button.

While waiting for your video to be uploaded, you can put content on the Title bar and on the Description bar. You can also choose a thumbnail for your video.

If you want to make your video public on YouTube, click the Public option. If you would like to keep your video from being found on YouTube, choose Unlisted which will still allow it to be seen on Fllair. We usually recommend making it unlisted, but the choice is yours.

7. Copy the Youtube URL into the Details tab in Fllair

Once uploaded, YouTube will generate a link that you can use to share your video.

You then copy this Video Link into the space provided in the Details tab.

Would you like some help?

We are currently offering help with creating and producing your Fllair profile video for just $55. Contact us using the bubble on the top right of the screen and one of our team can explain more about it. In a competitive job market, it’s becoming a popular option.

Students, it is a good idea to plan for the future

As an undergraduate student, career planning is essential in achieving success in your chosen area. It assists you in discovering key interests and values to develop career goals, which supports personal and professional development. It is important to begin planning your career before you graduate to increase your chances of employability.

Ask yourself the following questions to get you thinking and help you with career planning:

Where am I currently?

Think about your current situation.

  • What degree are you studying?
  • Do you have any relevant work experience or internship experience?
  • What are your key strengths and weaknesses?
  • What are your unique selling points?

Where do I want to be in the future?

Now, think about your career and professional aspirations.

  • Where do you see yourself after you graduate?
  • Think about both the short-term (3-5 years) and the long-term (5-10 years).

Why do I want to be here?

Think about your professional identity. This can be seen as a collection of your attributes, beliefs, morals and values that you use to define yourself and your specialised, skill and education-based occupations or vocations.  Your professional identity will evolve overtime, however, focus on the present and ask yourself the following:

  • Why do I want a career in this particular area?
  • What am I most passionate about in my chosen career?
  • What factors are important to me in my chosen career?
  • How are my attributes, beliefs and values aligned with my chosen profession?

How will I get there?

Here you consider the steps you will take to get you to your chosen career.

  • What are some things you have done so far to enhance your employability and achieve your goals?
  • What are some specific actions that you will need to take before you graduate to enhance your employability and achieve your immediate career goals?

When planning your career, you should implement SMART goals to motivate yourself and increase employability.

SMART goals are:

  • Specific – ensure your goals are as clear as possible
  • Measurable – quantify what you want to achieve
  • Achievable – motivate yourself while ensuring the goals you set are reachable
  • Realistic – be reasonable with your goals to ensure they are attainable
  • Timely – create timeframes for completing steps

What Should You Expect From Recruiters?

Finding the perfect job can be difficult, but it is even harder if you are working with recruiters that don’t have your back. Here are a few tips from expert recruiters about how to get the best out of the relationship when working with recruiters.

First though, you need to be able to identify a good recruiter from one who isn’t so good. The question to ask yourself is, will this person keep my best interests in mind, or are they all about the fee they get The measure of a great recruiter is their ability to provide you with a suitable experience even when they are busy.

#1 Communication

Job hunting can be a time-consuming and sometimes soul-destroying process, especially when you aren’t kept in the loop about where things are at. Effective communication is integral to the recruitment process, and you should expect to be kept up to date often.

However, communication is a two-way street. You will also need to be proactive with telling it how it is and being honest, keeping them up to date with any information that they need to do their job, and letting them know if you get close to getting another role.

A good recruiter will set expectations clearly up front so that you know what to expect, and what they expect of you. If this hasn’t happened, it is ok for you to ask questions like:

  • How often will I hear from you?
  • How often should I try to contact you if I haven’t heard anything?
  • At what points in the process will you update me?

Another thing we strongly suggest is simply doing what you say you will do. Turn up to calls and meetings on time, get back to people with information you said you would, and keep to your end of the bargain. Of course, you should also expect this from your recruiter.

#2 Honesty

There is nothing that sours a great working relationship than fake news. In other words, both you and the recruiter you are working with should be as truthful as possible with one another. All too often, we see people trying to put themselves in the best position by stretching the truth. Almost always, these stretched truths reveal themselves and then there is a break in trust. Once this happens, it is difficult to get it back.

We suggest bringing this up in conversation when you are talking to recruiters. “I promise to tell you everything straight up the way it is, and I would really appreciate you doing the same”.

#3 Being valued

Your time is valuable. Your skills are valuable. Your career is valuable. If you come across a recruiter who doesn’t think you are valuable, you are wasting your time. Of course, you should value their time and their skills and their professionalism too.

The reality is that there is only one person who will usually get the job you are going for, and unfortunately sometimes things won’t go your way. However the process is much easier when there is mutual respect, and this is what you should expect.

A few final words

If you have ever hired a person for your own team or been part of a process to hire someone, you will know that it is not always easy. There are many candidates to choose from, and it is difficult to judge some things in just a few interviews. Developing an effective working relationship with a recruitment consultant is a great way to put yourself ahead of the pack. They are your agent, and can often be the difference between getting an interview and not. The good ones are also very good at helping decision makers see your background and qualities in the most favourable light. But finding good recruiters is not always easy. When you find a good one, take the time to develop the relationship. It will be very worthwhile.

However, your best asset when looking for a new job is you. Remember to create and share your Fllair profile when you are applying for jobs to stand out from the crowd.
